New Hope Church
A Brief History of New Hope Church
The New Hope Assembly of God Church was founded on September 28, 1948, by Pastor Peter Brayko and his wife Lois. Both graduated from North Central Bible College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After exploring several possibilities in southwestern Wisconsin, they chose Platteville and moved there with their 3-month-old son.
The first service was held on November 21, 1948, in the council chambers at City Hall, which served as the congregation’s meeting place for many years. In September 1954, the congregation began building its own church. Soon after trenches were dug for the footings, three solid weeks of rain delayed the project. It was the first of many challenges. To keep costs low, most of the work was completed by volunteers.
The congregation celebrated on May 27, 1956, when it held its first service in the new building at 745 Lutheran Street, with 42 people in attendance.
In 1970, Rev. Brayko gave another Bible school graduate, Rev. Paul Hanson, the opportunity to pastor the church. Rev. Hanson served from 1970 to 1973. The pastors who followed were Rev. Jim Petersen (1973–1975), Rev. Richard McDowell (1975–1977), Rev. Curtis Thomassen (1977–1990), and Rev. Shawn Burgbacher (1990–1997).
In April 2000, Rev. Michael Majeski and his wife Cherie came to New Hope from Michigan and remain with the church today. From 2004 to 2010, the church met at the City Municipal Building.
Groundbreaking of the new building located at 677 Walnut Dell Road took place on April 19, 2009, and the first service there was held on January 17, 2010. The nearly 8,000-square-foot church was built and furnished debt-free. “God wonderfully provided the resources, and friendly, godly people blessed us graciously.”
New Hope Church is a growing community of everyday people learning to follow Jesus and do life together. Our heart is to love God, love people, and love life while helping others discover the hope that comes from a relationship with Jesus. We want everyone who walks through our doors to experience a sense of belonging and know they are seen, heard, loved, and valued.
